DARK OR LIGHT__ TRENDY OR NOT ?

You might have heard, one of the hottest trends in interior design has been dark colors. Which is only partly true, for many interior designers it is a staple. Whether using it as a main feature for walls and accents around a room, dark colors can add depth or needed contract in a space. Dark is not necessarily black or charcoal (thought those are favorites of mine) deep hues like navy, dark chocolate, and onyx has a timeless feel that looks like it will continue to be a popular choice among homeowners and designers alike.

Dark colors bring an aura of sophistication and elegance to any room. They can evoke a classic, sophisticated feeling, especially when used in the living room and dining room. On the other hand, they can also be used for a modern, sleek look in a bedroom, powder room or kitchen. Whether it be walls, trim, furniture, artwork or cabinets, dark colors can add a grounded feel that is perfect for any style.

When used on walls, dark colors appear to shift as the colors of adjacent surfaces or textures change. The subtle patterns created by mixing and matching dark colors create an inviting atmosphere that makes a room feel larger and cozier. Dark colors also highlights other colors in the design scheme. For example, adding a bright color off-set of navy blue creates an interesting, bold look that is sure to draw the eye.

Not only can the use of dark colors bring a timeless aesthetic to a project, but it can actually add longevity to the design, making it an permanent option that you can change your design around. Dark colors won’t date your home, making it easier to transition from style to style over time. They’re also extremely versatile, so can easily be complemented with pops of color or muted accessories, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve.

Whether you’re looking for a classic, modern or a transitional style, the increasing trend of using dark colors is a great way to create a timeless and sophisticated look that makes your home truly unique.
